The Brief

London North West University Healthcare (LNWH) and The Hillingdon Hospitals approached Agile Medical to bespoke a medical cart that would enable nursing staff to access digital drug charts and notes in the new Cerner EPR at the point of care.

After seeing demos of drug carts from competitors, no carts emerged as a firm favourite that fully met their needs. Many of the solutions on the market were too cumbersome and had limited storage capacity and locking hardware.

Agile Medical applied our Listen, Design, Support methodology with LNWH which has been key to other successful rollouts with NHS Trusts implementing similar projects.

Listen

By engaging in numerous meetings with nursing staff, IT and Infection Control teams from LNWH, we were able to fully understand the requirements with a view to providing a solution that would meet the following brief.

The key points we heard…

  • Wards are very tight for space, so the cart required a compact footprint
  • Smart card entry to drawers with an auto lock on the timer
  • Data audit trail of access to the medication drawers
  • High-capacity storage for medication
  • Tethered to the wall for security
  • Electric height adjustment.

Design

Work immediately commenced in the Agile team and with our supply chain partners to design a medication drawer storage unit that would integrate with our existing Exura PC cart and offer high capacity for over 200 individual drugs and access managed by RFID smart cards.

Our dedicated commercial and production teams rallied together to manufacture a demo cart over a Christmas break for LNWH to trial. The trial was an overwhelming success, and from order, we delivered 284 carts fully assembled to site in 10 weeks in time for the Cerner EPR rollout.

Support

Agile Medical is fully confident in the quality of our Exura range of carts and their capability to offer optimal performance over their service life which is why we were able to offer LNWH a 7-year fully comprehensive warranty.

Agile is not in the market for one-off transactions but is here to support our NHS’ nursing staff focus not on their equipment but on delivering outstanding patient care, and reliable carts are the backbone of this. Also, soon to be rolled out at LNWH is the ability to remotely manage the authentication of the smart cards across all six hospitals with new software.
